Ruddle - Tracks

About:

This piece makes me think of trees and tracks in the snow.

Images are drawn on Sailcloth and then cut out. I have been drawing abstracted tree shapes – like the blobby abstract shapes of trees covered in snow that I see at this time of year on my land.

I used rubber stamps (fox and deer tracks) on that I bought on a whim at an art store while in residency at The Vermont Studio Center this November. The stamps where kicking around my studio and one day and I picked them up and played with them. I painted the stamps with Japanese watercolor – sometimes the tracks came out, sometimes they look like paint drips or splotches and I am ok with that. The tracks are printed on tiny sheets of paper – giving the piece a fragile, delicate, and temporal quality.

I often think of an artist in relationship to my work, and this piece had me thinking about Mattise’s cut-outs. I am inspired by how Matisse described his cut-outs as “drawing with scissors” and I love this.
